Organizational Structure

The Carl Benz School of Engineering (CBS) is the international college program of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) for selected undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering (International).

The Carl Benz School of Engineering (CBS) does not provide independent teaching or award degrees. Academic instruction is delivered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KIT. Students are enrolled at KIT and complete the accredited Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Mechanical Engineering (International) awarded by KIT. Teaching within that program is carried out by professors and researchers from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KIT. The department comprises more than 20 institutes and is recognized for its strong research output and close collaboration with industry.

CBS complements this academic framework with an integrated support structure focused on three core areas: academic integration, fostering an international campus community, and supporting the transition to industry. This includes certificate courses taught by industry professionals as well as targeted support for internships. The CBS team consists of administrative and program management staff responsible for the organization and quality of the college program, as well as for supporting students in their academic progress, campus life, and early career orientation.

Carl Benz School is headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Thomas Böhlke in his role as Dean of Studies for Mechanical Engineering International (MEI), and Dr.-Ing. Judith Elsner as Managing Director.

KIT is one of Europe’s leading research universities, with approximately 9,300 employees and 25,000 students. Academic responsibility for degree programs lies with the respective departments, which report to the Vice President for Higher Education and Academic Affairs.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the KIT comprises more than 20 institutes, which manage student courses and research in the various branches of engineering. The department is consistently awarded top reviews for all its activities. Nationwide, KIT is one of the universities most strongly engaged in research.

A vibrant school depends on an equally dynamic and energetic support staff to keep all the behind-the-scenes processes running smoothly. At Carl Benz School we support students, parents and counselors as well as industry contacts and partners on a very high service level according to international standards.
